Set Priorities to Increase Productivity

Sitting here tonight I realize one thing:  I am not getting enough done in a day.  The reason:  no focus.

If you feel the same, you are not alone.  I find one of the most challenging thing being an entrepreneur, you need to set targets or goals for your day and work towards them.  Unlike a traditional job where someone gives you some tasks to do, you are on your own.

If you look at my past few days, you will see I have been a whirlwind of activity:  creating content for websites, blog posting, contributing to forums, looking at investment properties, looking at websites to invest in, marketing, etc.  If I would have had defined tasks or goals to achieve, I could have attained better results.

For the websites I manage, I have come up with a simple two day rotation:

  1. Create content
  2. Market the sites

From this simple division of tasks, I can accomplish more.  I don’t have to worry about writing to the blog on a day that I am marketing the sites.  You can apply this technique to other areas of business too.  For example, a real estate investor could divide their tasks in a two day rotation:

  1. Find investment properties to go look at
  2. Look at investment properties

I realize that this is rather simplistic, and some may ask about other tasks such as talking to a mortgage broker, finding tenants, etc. but this is really just a framework.  Do what works for you, and if you simplify your days into manageable tasks, you will be more productive at whatever you do.
