One of the biggest rewards of owning your own business is that you can choose to work from home. Not only does this solve some problems like having your children in daycare, but it also can come with its own share of problems.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of working from home is accountability. Unlike a regular job where someone checks up on you to see if you are getting the work done, when you are working at home, there are many distractions such as the television that may be more appealing than working.
To work effectively from home requires discipline and the ability to make oneself accountable. These are not easy tasks by any means, but if you follow the following tips, you will have greater success working at home.
- Set aside a portion of your home to be the office. It can …

One of the biggest hurdles for some people with respect to starting a business is finding the capital to make it happen. The problem is that most people don’t have much in terms of savings or other money to spare, and the thought of shelling out a lot of money to invest in a new business venture can be a large hurdle.
But thanks to the development of Web 2.0 sites, that is no longer a problem. Quite a few of these Web 2.0 properties allow someone with no money to earn their first dollars online. Sure, there is a bit of a time commitment, but beyond that, no money is required.
A good example of these types of sites would be Squidoo.com or Hubpages.com. They allow you to setup a page on any …

One of the most useful skills that you can develop (in my opinion) is learning how to build a business. The reason that I think this way is that it gives you the opportunity to both increase your financial well being as well as the ability to create money out of thin air.
Now I know that I could get a job if I wanted one, but in all fairness, working a job will never make me rich. Even if I was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, you have to bear in mind that trading your time for money is not a very good deal. Sure, I wouldn’t mind to make that kind of money, but in the end I would be sacrificing my freedom for a very small amount of money – which isn’t a good deal at all.
Once you learn the "art" of creating …

One of the biggest things that I learned this year is that you need to outsource what you can so that you can get more work done. This was very hard for me, as in some respects I am a bit of a perfectionist – I want to make sure that everything is done to my standards.
In that case, you would put your potential employees through a hiring process of sorts, and weed out the good from the bad. This process can take some time, but what if you need to get something simple done quickly?
Post your job on Amazon Mechanical Turk.
If you haven’t heard of it before, it is a marketplace that connects businesses to a scaleable workforce. The way it works is you define the task that you need completed, assign a dollar value to the task, and post it on …

I have been really busy building other websites to expand my web empire, and I forgot one important thing:
I quit promoting this site.
Well, that was a big mistake as I have dropped from being number one for "business opportunities" to not ranking at all (I am talking about ranking on Google Canada). I guess it was a little bit of an oversight since I guess I took my site rankings for granted as I had been there for years.
But the cost of my mistake is lost income every day. Sure, this site didn’t make a fortune, but the couple hundred dollars that it brought in each month helped our finances out – and now the site isn’t making much money at all.
So, I have gone back to basics. I am marketing this site again through many different channels, and I know that …

With the popularity of Web 2.0, there is an increase in the number of content sharing sites available on the Internet. These not only allow you to develop free webpages in any niche, but can also allow you to dominate search engine rankings from many different avenues.
One of the most recent sites about joined is Gather.com. It is a little different than other content sharing sites such as Squidoo.com and Hubpages.com. The site more resembles an article directory and design where he would submit a single piece of content such as an article, video, or photograph.
There’s a lot of freedom when it comes to submitting content and it is not uncommon to see articles relating to daily …

It has been awhile since I updated my progress of the One Asset Per Day (OAPD) challenge. I have been very busy with a blog posting service that I started up, but I finally had a moment to breathe and make some sites today. The sites that I created today are not related to my core market, but were niche markets that I came up with and I felt that they would be easy to succeed in.
The first Squidoo lens I made today was about bad breath causes and remedies. It is something that we all suffer from, and it was a good opportunity to write about something that I was familiar with (not that I have bad breath all the time).
Today I also created my first Squidoo group – All Squidoo Lenses Welcome. It really didn’t take …

I am very thankful that my business has been growing by leaps and bounds lately. In fact, it is nice that I have as much work as I want to do heading into the slow summer season. But the one challenge that I have been facing is the fact that I am having to learn how to manage a larger business.
Take for example the fact that I have two people working for me. Now, that might not seem too hard to manage, but it is the first time that I have ever had employees ever. What makes it even more challenging is that they don’t live in the same city as me at all – in fact, they are in a different country. I love that I have this ability (since most of my business is online) but it also makes things a little more difficult.
The …

Re-read the title. Got it?
Alright. One of the biggest mistakes that you can make in business is to duplicate yourself.
What I mean by this is that if you removed yourself from your business would it be able to exist on its’ own? Well it shouldn’t.
Sure, the day to day operations should be able to work without you at the helm, but it should not be able to completely function on its’ own. Sure, having your business work without you would be nice, but there is one big problem with that:
You risk losing everything.
That’s right, your sales, profits, and even the edge that your business currently has. If there is another company out there that offers the same product or service that you offer, why would they give their business to you?
A good example of why you shouldn’t duplicate yourself came to me while traveling …

Well, it seems like it has been forever since I have mentioned anything about the One Asset Per Day (OAPD) program. Originally, I had intended to do an update each day but life has been a little busy. That sometimes happens, but that doesn’t mean that I have stopped working by any means.
Over the past few weeks I have made some other lenses and hubs on Hubpages.com. Some examples would be my first movie lens Flight of the Living Dead and one on the Flip Video Camera.
I have been making sites that are not really related to my core business to check out different markets as to whether or not they are worth entering.
But in the future, I will make a point of detailing the journey a little better – and not blaming it on “getting busy”.
